Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3#Ps. 22:6; (Is. 49:7; Matt. 27:30, 31; Luke 18:31–33; 23:18)He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and #(Heb. 4:15)acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and #(John 1:10, 11)we did not esteem Him. 4Surely #(Matt. 8:17; Heb. 9:28; 1 Pet. 2:24)He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5But He was #(Is. 53:10; Rom. 4:25; 1 Cor. 15:3, 4)wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His #(1 Pet. 2:24, 25)stripes we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet #Matt. 26:63; 27:12–14; Mark 14:61; 15:5; Luke 23:9; John 19:9He opened not His mouth; #Acts 8:32, 33; Rev. 5:6He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 8He was #Matt. 27:11–26; Luke 23:1–25taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For #(Dan. 9:26)He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. 9#Matt. 27:57–60; Luke 23:33And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any #1 Pet. 2:22; 1 John 3:5deceit in His mouth. 10Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul #John 1:29; Acts 2:24; (2 Cor. 5:21)an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. 11He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge #(1 John 2:1)My righteous #Is. 42:1Servant shall #(Acts 13:38, 39; Rom. 5:15–18)justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. 12#Ps. 2:8Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, #Col. 2:15And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He #Is. 50:6; (Rom. 3:25)poured out His soul unto death, And He was #Matt. 27:38; Mark 15:28; Luke 22:37; 2 Cor. 5:21numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And #Luke 23:34made intercession for the transgressors.”
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, #Deut. 21:23“Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14#(Rom. 4:1–5, 9, 16; Gal. 3:28)that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the #Is. 42:1, 6; 49:6; Luke 2:32; Rom. 3:29, 30Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive #Is. 32:15the promise of the Spirit through faith.”
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become #(Rom. 1:17; 3:21); 1 Cor. 1:30the righteousness of God in Him.”
And about the ninth hour #(Heb. 5:7)Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, #Ps. 22:1“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I #Matt. 26:53; (John 2:19; 5:26)have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. #(John 6:38; 14:31; 17:4; Acts 2:24, 32)This command I have received from My Father.”
Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb #Luke 23:56bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2#Matt. 28:2; Mark 16:4But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3#Mark 16:5Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that #John 20:12; Acts 1:10behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but is risen! #Matt. 16:21; Mark 8:31; Luke 9:22Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7saying, ‘The Son of Man must be #Hos. 6:1, 2; Luke 9:44; 11:29, 30; 18:31–33delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ” 8And #Luke 9:22, 44; John 2:19–22they remembered His words.”
Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13But if there is no resurrection of the dead, #(1 Thess. 4:14)then Christ is not risen. 14And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. 15Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because #Acts 2:24we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. 16For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. 17And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; #(Rom. 4:25)you are still in your sins! 18Then also those who have fallen #Job 14:12; Ps. 13:3asleep in Christ have perished. 19#1 Cor. 4:9; 2 Tim. 3:12If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. 20But now #Acts 2:24; 1 Pet. 1:3Christ is risen from the dead, and has become #Acts 26:23; 1 Cor. 15:23; Rev. 1:5the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21For #Gen. 3:19; Ezek. 18:4; Rom. 5:12; 6:23; Heb. 9:27since by man came death, #John 11:25by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall #(John 5:28, 29)be made alive. 23But #(1 Thess. 4:15–17)each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24Then comes the end, when He delivers #(Dan. 2:44; 7:14, 27; 2 Pet. 1:11)the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25For He must reign #Ps. 110:1; Matt. 22:44till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26#(2 Tim. 1:10; Rev. 20:14; 21:4)The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27For #Ps. 8:6“He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28#(Phil. 3:21)Now when all things are made subject to Him, then #1 Cor. 3:23; 11:3; 12:6the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.”
